Insurance for Architects & Engineers

We place every line a design firm needs — general liability, property, auto, workers' comp and more — and we lead with the coverage A&E firms care about most: professional liability, quoted early and shopped across the markets that specialize in design risk.

A FULL PROGRAM, LED BY PL

Every coverage a design firm needs

KHT places the complete commercial program for architects and engineers: professional liability, general liability, commercial property, business auto, workers' compensation, umbrella, and the business owner's policy that bundles the essentials. Whatever your firm carries, we can quote it and bring it under one roof — without making you chase separate agents for separate policies.

Professional Liability (E&O)

Not a visitor slipping in the lobby — the risk that lives in your actual work: a design that didn't perform, a spec that was misread, a calculation a contractor built on and a client later questioned.

It's also the coverage priced most differently from firm to firm. A structural engineer, a geotechnical firm, and a civil practice don't face the same claims — and a civil engineer in Texas isn't looking at the same markets as one in California.

That's what an independent broker is for: matching your discipline to the insurance company that prices it best.

Design & specification claims

Defense and damages when a client alleges your drawings, specs, or calculations caused them a loss.

Legal defense costs

Covered even when the allegation is groundless — and on a design claim, defense is where the real cost lives.

Continuity & retroactive date

We protect your prior-acts coverage so a switch in Insurance companies never opens a gap behind you.

If your business needs it, we likely write it.

Eighteen commercial lines across four areas — from the policies every business carries to specialty and surety coverage.

Disciplines we place

Built for the range of A&E practice.

One A&E professional liability application can serve firms across these disciplines — which is part of why we can turn a quote around quickly, without sending you back for a second round of questions.

Early renewal quotes

We quote your renewal well ahead of expiration — giving you time to review and compare, not a take-it-or-leave-it the day before.

Multiple carriers, lowest qualified quote

We shop across markets and recommend the best-fit, best-priced option.

Owners on your account

An established, owner-led team. When you call, you speak directly with the people responsible for protecting your business.

The renewal difference

Why timing is the A&E hot button.

Most design firms don't switch brokers because of a claim. They switch because their current broker put them in a corner — renewal terms the day before expiration, no time to shop. Here's how we run it instead.

60-90 days out

We start early

Well before your expiration date, we're already preparing your submission — not waiting for the deadline to force your hand.

45 days out

We shop the market

We shop with insurance companies that specialize in design professionals, and we compare what comes back side by side.

30 days out

You review with time

You get options and a recommendation with real time to consider them — the opposite of a same-week ultimatum.

common questions

The questions A&E firms ask.

Can you quote us in more than one state?

Yes. We place A&E professional liability across many states. The right markets shift depending on where you practice, and matching your work to the insurance companies who price it best in each state is exactly what an independent broker does.

How far ahead of my renewal should I reach out?

Sooner is always better, but 60 to 90 days before expiration gives us room to shop thoroughly and gives you room to review without pressure. If your renewal is closer than that, still reach out — we'll move quickly.

Will switching carriers affect my prior-acts coverage?

It doesn't have to. Protecting your retroactive date so there's no gap behind you is a core part of how we handle a move. We'll confirm continuity before recommending any change.

A client contract requires a specific PL limit — can you place that?

Almost always. Client and public-agency contracts often dictate a minimum professional liability limit, and we place coverage to meet the requirement — then give you the certificate that proves it. Send us the contract language and we'll match it.

How do you decide what limit an A&E firm actually needs?

We look at your project sizes, your contractual requirements, your discipline, and your revenue — then recommend a limit that covers your real exposure without paying for coverage you don't need. It's a conversation, not a default.

Do we have to move our other coverage to work with you?

No. Many firms come to us for professional liability first. If it makes sense to consolidate general liability, business auto, workers' compensation, or an umbrella later, we're glad to — but there's no requirement, and Professional Liability is where we lead.

Quote your A&E coverage.

Start with professional liability or your whole program — tell us about your business and we'll shop it. Or call and talk it through with the people who'll actually handle your account.
